Black History Month

Black History Month is an annual observance during the month of February in the United States. The celebration is also known as African-American History, Afro-American History, and and Black Experience Month.
It has received official recognition from governments in the United States and Canada, and more recently has been observed in Ireland, and the United Kingdom. It is celebrated in February in the United States and Canada, while in Ireland, and the United Kingdom it is observed in October.
In 1926, Dr. Carter Woodson instituted a week-long celebration of the contributions of Black Americans to history. Dr. Woodson chose the week of Abraham Lincoln's birthday (February 12). In recent years the observance has expanded, and now the entire month of February is celebrated as Black American History Month.
